Virtual Coffee Date: The one with the RT17 Recap & Giveaway

May 19, 2017 5:08 pm Published by 47 Comments

Holy crap, I’m so behind with my posts this is more of a Virtual Wine and Cheese than a morning coffee date…oh well, grab a drink and let’s chat, I’ve missed you.

If we were having drinks (see what I did there?) I’d tell you that the Nerds and I did the RT Booklovers Convention in Atlanta, GA and we did it hard! We ate, we drank, we laughed, we were amazed, we were shocked and awed, we met people, we got all of the books but most of all, we thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. It was a great time. We discussed it on the podcast earlier, you can click the image below to go listen to that…it’s a lot of laughs.

Let’s start at the beginning. We learned all about Facebook Live! We were lucky enough to grab some time with some super fun authors during the event, they regaled us with funny stories and news about upcoming books. Of course, the video evidence lives on Facebook, hence the name Facebook Live but I’ll link them up here for you.

First up was Chelsea Mueller. (click on her name to see the video – technology is freaking awesome!) Her debut release Borrowed Souls went live during RT and this was her very first author signing. Next up was some always silly time spent with the lovely ladies of Christina Lauren fame! Dating You Hating You is coming out June 6th…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. These ladies have so much going on I don’t know when they sleep! Later that day, I spent some time with Amy E. Reichert…and by spent some time I mean pretty much tackle hugged her because let’s face it, she’s tackle-hugable. Her latest book, The Simplicity of Cider hit Kindles earlier this week so go read it! Later, the lovely Rebeca sat down with the lovely Rebecca Brooks and seriously, how much fun is all of that?!!?

Next, I’ll tell you all about the little giveaway scavenger hunt game we worked out. Being 11 contributors strong, we are lucky enough to get to know lots of authors. Several authors were unable to attend this year’s convention so, we had them send along some autographed books. We took said books and hid them in some fun places around the venue ..and some pretty places, too. I’m looking at you Cameron at the restaurant Sway. Once hidden, we’d send out a message on social media with an image and a clue. This lady, and if you’re reading this, please comment with your name, I can not find it in my notes anywhere and I feel like shit for forgetting…but this lady is a social media fiend, she found so many of our books!

Then came our big event, the Scandalicious Shenanigans. Lola took some beautiful pictures of the fun, go here to see all of them. We had an amazing group of authors, 22 in total: Avery Flynn, Harper Kincaid, Lara Adrian, Karen Booth, Sarina Bowen, Sonali Dev, Cristin Harber, Sara Humphreys, Laura Kaye, Mira Lyn Kelly, Beth Kery, Kim Law, Nana Malone, Trish McCallen, Kate Meader, Erin Nicholas, Terri Osburn, Christy Reece, Lexi Ryan, Jill Sanders and Joanna Schupe to be precise. We allowed about 100 attendees to join them at tables where we played a Jeopardy style game with some questions Nikki’s big brain came up with. I’m pleased to say, she stumped people more than once and that “Not So Contemporary Contemporary” category was a huge hit! Things we learned from this event…when all else fails, laugh because everyone is getting some free shit…romance readers can be a very competitive bunch when they see a Grand Prize goodie bag stuffed to the gills with 23 books! We even lucked out and had a special guest appearance visit from none other than Kristen Ashley. You just never know what sort of surprises you’ll get when you roll with Scandal and the Nerds! So much fun, good lord it was so stressful but in the end, worth every ounce of flop sweat I dripped from my pits! I was so worried no one would show up to play our game so you can imagine my surprise when we arrived an hour before start time and found a line all the way down the hall!! No joke guys, we had to turn people away! Have no fear, no one left empty handed. The Grand Prize winning table may have taken home the biggest haul, but everyone, even the folks we had to turn away went home with a beautiful goodie bag, filled with books and download cards. I’m going to take a little moment right now to thank my Nerds for doing so much to make this event the smashing success it was. We prepped for every possible scenario and did dry runs to help me work through my nerves. No one could’ve prepared me from the heckling one lady gave me but it’s an experience under my belt and a lesson learned for next time! That lady was not nice. I also want to thank the authors for playing along – they did a great job! So much fun, I’m guessing we will have to do a repeat performance in 2018.

If we were having drinks, I’d tell you that all in all, RT17 was a ton of fun. Just like anything, there were great and not so great things. The food in Atlanta = great. Meeting readers and author in such a relaxed setting = great. Waiting in line for over an hour only to get into a room that was so small and crammed with people you literally could not move = not great at all Avon. That room was packed too tight. As usual, the bar at the center of the hotel was the place to be throughout the day and especially at night. Nikki would like everyone to know she thinks cover models are creepy and hanging around a bar without a shirt is gross. I’d like to add it’s probably a health violation, too! I think it’s really funny that this was Nikki’s first RT and that’s the quote she wanted me to share with you guys! This was also TJ’s first RT and she loved it! Her highlights include meeting Nikki for the first time (I think that’s something all of us can agree on!) as well as Sunny and her crazy sister, Susan. TJ enjoyed meeting Sienna Snow and thinks Avery Flynn is larger than life…again, this is something we can all agree on!

If we were having drinks I’d say in years past, I’ve been most excited to meet some of my favorite authors, Kristen Ashley, Tiffany Reisz and Susanna Kearsley stand out most vividly in my mind…but you guys probably already knew that. This time around I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the lovely and talented Brenda Jackson. That woman is truly a founding Mother of Romance and if you ever get the chance, take some time to hear some of her stories. Having said that, my favorite first time meet for RT17 would have to be Nikki. I’ve talked to Nikki almost daily for pretty much 5 years but you haven’t lived until you’ve had Nikki bless your heart in real time! I’m adding a rafflecopter below because I have so many books, bags, and goodies I need to giveaway. I’m not going to make you jump through hoops I just have one simple question for you to enter. I’m just going to keep pulling winners until I run out of stuff – there is so much stuff, I’d venture to say I’ll have at least 15 goodly sized prize packs for you, maybe more.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you the next RT is being held in Reno, NV May 15 – 20, 2018. Will any of you guys, especially you west coasters, be able to attend? I realize it’s a pricey endeavor but man, it’s a ton of fun and if you plan your day right, you’ll go home with enough books to earn back your ticket price! So, while I have you…what are your plans for the weekend? See you next week and I’ll try to get my shit together earlier so we can have a true Virtual Coffee Date!

I want to meet Tiffany Reisz.

  • I had the best time at your Romance Jeopardy event! Thanks for having me 🙂

  • Jennifer S says:

I want to meet Julie Garwood because it was one of her historicals that truly turned me into an exclusive romance reader.

I hope to make it to an RT convention at some point. It usually happens within a few weeks of my professional convention, though, so it’s hard to swing both. I have been to Reno before, though, and it’s fun little city. But much different from Vegas. We took a day and drove to Lake Tahoe from Reno (it’s about 1.5 hrs away) and that is a beautiful place! Pluse we stopped in Carson City along the way!

  • Heather says:

There are so many, but Kristen Ashley would be my first pick!

  • Susana Pimentel says:

    I wish to go someday.
Definetly Julie Garwood or Julia Quinn. Both made me start reading romance after a tought time in my life. Not sure what question 🙁

  • Thien-Kim says:

I would love to have drinks with Amy Tan. I’ve seen her speak and have gotten books signed, but I just want to hang and shoot the shit with her.

  • Tina S. says:

I’d love to meet Cara Mckenna–so deliciously smutty! No questions for me. I’d just want to bask in her glow.

  • Carol C. says:

I would love to meet several authors. But if I had to pick just one it would be Eloisa James. And my question for her would be “How do you juggle your two careers and family and still manage to produce such wonderful stories?” I mean, I’m impressed with myself if I can work an 8 hour shift, do laundry, cook dinner, and get some reading time in during a day, and she does so much more! Love her!

  • Taylor P says:

Thanks to the nerds for sharing their RT memories. If I could meet one author, I’d choose Kristen Ashley.

  • bev says:

Saturday will be catching up on everything I didn’t do during the work week. Sunday will be boating on the river, friends, and good food.

  • Rebecca says:

I’d love to meet Nalini Singh. How do you keep up with all your series? They’re all really different, but my goodness.

  • Natalija says:

    Fantastic post! Thanks for sharing.

Sandra Brown. She is my favourite author. Her Texas! Tyler Family Saga and Breath of Scandal were among my first romance books. Through the years, her writing style has changed a lot, but I often find myself coming back to her books. So fas I have read more than 30 of her titles, but since her backlist is similar to that of Nora Roberts, I still have a long road ahead 🙂

  • I’d love to meet Karen Rose. How does she come up with these stories and villains????

  • Maggie&Teddy says:

Love Christina Lauren. I would love to meet them. I wish that I could read more of their books, but they’re so expensive. I’ve met Penny Reid (love her!) and CD Reiss (she’s funny) . I love their books. I almost met Tiffany Reisz (my husband rushed me out of the book signing!), but I did Kinnear her on my cell phone. LOL.
Thanks for sharing. I hope that we get an event like that in So Calif. I would love it in Orange County since I’m afraid to drive in L.A. 😉

  • Angela says:

I don’t really need to meet any authors that I read, although it would be nice. For me it would be a more fun experience to meet the people from the blog. These wonderful ladies that I have gotten to know and call my friends. Author types included among this.

  • Karen Gagnon says:

I know this sounds too serious but I would love to meet Plato. I am obsessed with Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and would love to pick his brain. 🙂

  • Dodi Gaines says:

So sad I didn’t get a chance to go. 🙁 That’s probably the last time in a while it’ll be so close to me. Pepper Winters would be my pick. Not sure she goes to writer things very often.

  • JenM says:

I’d like to meet JK Rowling. Her books singlehandedly revived reading for an entire generation of kids (and a lot of adults too). I don’t think I have any questions, I’d just like to meet her and thank her.

  • Rita Luken says:

Well I already met Kristen Ashley and was so star stuck i could barely talk.My first romances books were Harlequins books, doctors and nurses galore 🙂 Gone With the Wind was my first historical novel. So I would have love to sit and talked to Margaret Mitchell about her book. Wishing I could have met Nikki and seen all the other ladies again. Thanks for a great giveaway! Fingers crossed!

  • Laura Lovejoy-Brunk says:

Which author would i love to meet ? I’ve met thru signings quit a few, but what id really love is to sit down and actually talk to them. Of course i’d be a nervous wreck, but….
    in no particular order:
    Diana Gabaldon
    JR Ward
    Karen Marie Moning
    Santino Hassell
    Nicole Edwards
    Christina Lauren
    Tiffany Reisz

  • Kathy says:

I soooo hope to go in 2018. I only went to one day in 2016 and while I was able to expect a little more than that, I think I need to have the full experience. Not to mention, who can pass up the opportunity to hang with the Nerds?! Since I’ve already had the huge opportunity to meet KA on a few occasions, I think my absolute dream come true would be to meet Judith McNaught. I know that is highly unlikely to ever happen, but never say never!! What would I ask her if given said opportunity? I’m not sure since I’m pretty sure I would not be able to speak!

  • Jaime says:

I would love to meet Kim Holden! I’m not entirely sure if I would be able to form a coherent sentence if I was face to face with her. She is simply amazing! I think I would ask her how she remains so positive all the time?

  • Jessica C says:

If I were sticking to romance I’d say the author I’d most want to meet is Tessa Dare. Her books made me realize that I could like historical romance.

It looks like you all had a great time, the scavenger hunt was such a good idea !

  • Katey says:

Ooh! I would love to meet Penny Reid. Her characters are so smart and funny, the person who creates them must be a hoot!

  • Bube says:

    Awesome! 😀
I would like to meet Cynthia Eden, she is one of my favorite authors! 🙂
    What question,I don’t know 😀

  • Anita H. says:

I would love to meet Jill Shalvis someday since she’s one of my all-time favorite authors. I would love to hang out with her and ask how she gets her inspiration for her hot heroes! 😉

  • I’ll go with an author. Alice Clayton. She has to be funny as shit!

  • Ada says:

RT sounded like so much fun, it’s on my bucket list for someday! I’ll have to choose Penny Reid, love her books and her style of writing. She would be so much for to chill with, I want to pick her brain and ask her about the inspirations for her quirky characters.

  • Tanya Guthrie says:

I would love to meet Kristen Ashley, but I think I would be freaking out too much to actually be able to think, or talk, or breathe. I would probably just pass out.

  • Kasey Bean says:

I’d like to meet EL James I’d ask her how she came up with the fifty shades of grey series

  • melissa craig says:

okay I know it sounds weird but I would love to meet Judy Blume, First I would love to thank her for helping me when I was a child reading her books a a pre teen and teen and tell her how much my daughters loved her books as well, and I would ask what made first start writing, and why young adult when no one was writing young adult back then
