You know them and you love them, category romance with the secret baby trope! They are a staple in every avid romance readers’ library. I love them generally but when they are particularly well crafted, well, you just can’t beat them! Karen Booth gave us a taste of secret baby with a hefty dose of romantic suspense with Pregnant by the Billionaire. She follows it up nicely with HOLIDAY BABY BOMBSHELL and I’m gonna tell you why you should read it!
Unplanned pregnancy happens, a lot. I mean, in books and in real life, it’s not a blip on the old radar, it’s a reality. In HOLIDAY BABY BOMBSHELL, Michael and Charlotte were in a monogamous relationship, but, for reasons you’ll have to read, it didn’t work out and they went their separate ways. Imagine Charlotte’s shock when she discovers she has a bun in the oven, through no fault of anyone. I mean guys, it happens, sometimes it just happens. Abstinence is the only thing that’s 100% – we don’t need a pesky antibiotic to interfere or a torn condom or whatever, sometimes, unplanned pregnancies happen and they usually happen at the most inopportune time, don’t you think? Anyway, Charlotte has to figure out what to do next.
Michael Kelly is our hero and I’m not gonna lie, he’s a bit of a dick. Michael is a former Olympian of the swimming variety. He’s left that pool to swim with the sharks of the NYC real estate market. He’s is singularly focused on his career…and the reason behind that? Well, you’ll have to read the book to get his story but I will say, his parents are exceptional assholes. When he met Charlotte, she flipped all of his switches but sadly, she couldn’t get through the impenetrable wall he built around his life. Like I said, he’s a bit of a dick but Booth manages to soften him enough to bring it all around without making him lose his edge.
Charlotte Locke comes from old money and as the only girl in an incredibly dysfunctional family, she wears the label of drama queen/fuck up like a scarlet A. I mean we all have our unspoken place in the family dynamic, don’t we? Even if we grow out of it, it’s a hard label to shake. Well, this unplanned pregnancy rattles Charlotte into making real and lasting change in her life. She’s a grown ass woman, about to be a single mom so she needs to get her proverbial house in order. And she does. My favorite part of this book is watching Charlotte find her footing – and she does it beautifully. She’s loved Michael since their paths first crossed and he is definitely her Achilles heel but she has bigger buns in the oven!
Both parties screw up and both have to make amends. Michael has a beautiful declaration of love as everything comes to a head just in time for Christmas. I’d be remiss if I omitted a mention of the sex, it’s emotional and hot. Michael’s body is a wonderland after all! Booth gives us an old standard with a modern feel. The writing is smart, the banter is entertaining but the character growth is the real gem. HOLIDAY BABY BOMBSHELL is a very satisfying read so do yourself a favor and check it out!
