There are two kinds of people in the world. The ones who look first, and the ones who leap. I’ve always been more of a looker. Cautious. A planner. That changed after I met Drew Evans. He was so persistent. So sure of himself – and of me.
But not all love stories end happily ever after. Did you think Drew and I were going to ride off into the sunset? Join the club. Now I have to make a choice, the most important of my life. Drew already made his –in fact, he tried to decide for the both of us. But you know that’s just not my style. So I came back to Greenville. Alone. Well, sort of alone….
What I’ve come to realize is that old habits die hard and sometimes you have to go back to where you began, before you can move ahead.
Twisted takes place two years after Tangled. Kate and Drew are not married but they are still madly in love and lust with each other. Twisted is Kate’s story. Do not go into this book thinking you’re going to get inside Drew’s head – sure, you get a glimpse every now and then but Twisted is all about Kate. Kate has far more issues and demons rumbling around in her head than I realized in Tangled. Kate has a lot of shit she needs to work out. Dare I say, she’s almost as fucked up as Drew…and I mean that in the most endearing way possible.
There are a couple of things I really love about this book. First off, just as Ms. Chase did in Tangled, she breaks down the fourth wall. That’s a TV or theater term used when an actor acknowledges or talks to the audience. Kate does that quite a bit in this book and I love it. She answers her critics that way and it’s pretty fucking genius. I’m certain Ms. Chase realized when she typed The End on this novel that there would be certain parts of this story that would piss people off. Kate certainly doesn’t shy away from pointing those things out and explaining why she’s going to do shit her way, so rage on my friends…Kate has a process she needs to work through and you’re just going to have to hang on for the ride. She knows Drew has some immaturity issues, some trust issues, some fucking impulse issues and in order to deal she has to leave. Kate knows she’s not strong enough to resist him if she stays, and staying means she will never sort her head. Kate knows it’s not going to take much groveling from Drew to win her back so she puts distance between them. I appreciate Ms. Chase’s winks and nods to us, the reader…I think she nailed it.
Let’s discuss Drew for a moment. Can I just tell you how fucking angry I was…at myself for immediately jumping to his defense in my head. All I could thing was, fuck me sideways, Nikki is going to have my ass on a cracker when she hears my reaction to this. That boy fucks up big time…HUGE. He does things and says things that can’t be unseen or unheard. He fucking goes there and gets there fast. Emma Chase is part of the not fucking around club people, she jumps right in with the angst of this story…a story predicated on a fucking misunderstanding. Both parties make mistakes but in my opinion, and in pains me to no end to say this…Drew holds the bulk of the blame. (can I get some of my ass back now Nikki, please? It was a knee jerk reaction to defend him…the boy has issues) I know you are ready to torch my house right now but settle down. Twisted might be Kate’s book, but both do a whole lot of growing in this one and that’s all I have to say about that.
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this book. It has the humor we loved in Tangled but it also goes really deep. I guess that’s because we get in Kate’s head and let’s face it, we women folk are a deep ocean of secrets (oh yeah, Titanic reference). I read this one in an afternoon – you have to because you are not going to want to put it down.
