Against the Wall (Entangled Brazen)
Never challenge a cowboy in the courtroom…
Surveying the proposed site for a high-end golf course should have been a breeze for spunky Landscape Architect Sophie Smith. But when this born-and-bred city girl is suddenly—and quite literally—swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy on horseback, she realizes that the country life has some serious (and seriously steamy!) possibilities. That is, until she finds out exactly who her smokin’-hot wrangler really is.
Cowboy and Tribal lawyer Jake Lodge is desperately trying to block the development. And if that means playing hardball—and being every inch the shark lawyer—so be it. But Sophie is a distraction he didn’t expect. A distraction that makes his blood burn.
Two different worlds. Two opposing sides. And when they finally give into the exquisite temptation, the consequences will shake the foundations of both of their lives…
As some of you are aware, our resident Southern Belle Nikki has some weekend Catholic guilt so she reads Harlequins on Sundays… like six of them! So about a month ago I decided that I needed a weekend theme and I started my own Entangled Brazen weekend. I can’t bang off six books in a day like SOME people so I allowed myself the weekend to indulge in my guiltless reads where hopefully I can get through two, maybe three books. I had already had a number of these books on my TBR list but I went to Amazon and typed Entangled Brazen in the search bar and pages upon pages of pretty, colourful, hot covers caused my eyes to glaze over. My husband says I am like a magpie; I like shiny glittery things…well hot men with ab-tastic covers can cause me to lose all train of thought… Now what was I talking about again?
I believe there were 32 books in the Brazen line at last count. Where to start? Well if you truly know me at all, you know I started with the football players. But I also give preference to authors I have already read and loved. Rebecca Zanetti fits nicely into this category. I have read almost all the books in her Dark Protectors series and let me state that I would highly recommend them for any paranormal lovers out there. Hot, alpha vampires are the main focus but there is some shifter love too. But I digress here with my book ADD.
Against the Wall by Rebecca Zanetti is the first in her Maverick Montana series. There are four siblings in the Lodge-Freeze family so I am going to assume that since the second book in the series, Under the Covers, is about a brother, the future books will feature the remaining siblings. Sophie Smith is a city girl through and through and she has got the Manolo’s to prove it. She is artistically talented and uses that talent to design golf courses. Sophie has flown from her home base in San Francisco to survey the area for the proposed golf course in the middle of nowhere Montana. While out walking in the woods, without warning, Sophie finds herself lifted and slammed down on the back of a horse. Sophie takes exception to the manhandling but when the cowboy on that horse is Jake Lodge, I sure as hell wouldn’t complain. Enjoy the ride girl! Oh, that is probably irresponsible of me. Bad Tania! Do NOT enjoy being accosted by a hot as hell stranger even if he is huge, at least six foot four, packed hard with muscles, dark hair, long lashes and tawny eyes. Yeah, no…no…don’t enjoy that! Jake is immediately drawn to not only Sophie’s beauty but her stubbornness and fierceness. He nicknames her Sunshine. Sunshine. Jake Lodge had me swooning from the get go! I am not a fan of nicknames. Honey, sweetheart, snookum’s…NOT for me! I am a ‘babe’ type of girl. But sunshine…yeah, I liked that one!
Suffice to say that Sophie is not happy to find out that the hot cowboy that she has been fantasizing over turns out to be the lawyer for the Kooskia Tribe who will be opposing the site for the golf course. The tribe is in disagreement with the placement of the golf course next to their lake. Jake is hopeful that the City Girl will want the opportunity to get better acquainted while she is in town even if they are sitting on opposite sides of this issue.
“…my momma taught me to be a gentleman. I didn’t say I was good at the lessons.”
Sweet Baby Jesus, Jake Lodge is as Alpha as they come! He is an ex-Army Ranger that is now a pit bull of a lawyer who thrives on stress and challenge. He is a cowboy that works the land on his family’s ranch on the reservation. He is also a single dad raising a six year old daughter. Jake knows better than to give his heart to a girl with big city dreams but guts and beauty all wrapped up in a pretty package is a temptation he is not able to resist. The longer Sophie stays in Montana, surrounded by the wonderful members and friends of the Lodge-Freeze family the more she envies their warm, supportive and caring family dynamic. She has endured a shitty upbringing and the sense of belonging in the small town starts to feel like home to her.
When Jake and Sophie connect, it is explosive, and HAWT! Smashing dishes and a tabletop, in the rain up against the side of a house, in fact, a few walls were harmed in the making of this book, hence the title. But how does a country boy and a city girl on opposing sides find common ground? Especially when Sophie’s personal safety is threatened, her friend and co-worker wants to make a personal merger to save their business and Jake has some questionable motives of his own. Never doubt Jake Lodge!
“I caught her, I get to keep her.”
