Sparrow Reed might look like an angel, but she’s a witch with a back full of enchanted tattoos and she’s not afraid to use them. When her best friend’s life is threatened by an evil Goddess, Sparrow joins an epic battle against the demons sent to destroy her home. She never realized that the night she almost died, her life would truly begin.
Rowen Aerion of the Knights of the Fog was sent to the human realm to tip the balance in an unfair fight. But when he arrives on Alcatraz Island to aid the mortal humans, he sees an angel fighting demons. But she’s not an angel, she’s human. And according to a soothsayer, his love for her will mean her demise.
Sparrow is thrust into a world she never imagined existed, yet nothing thrills her like the handsome warrior who refuses her seduction. When Rowen’s rejection sends Sparrow into the arms of a dangerous rebel, Rowen must decide which is more dangerous, the oracle’s grim warning, or forsaking his heart’s sole desire.
In the second book of this series, Jaye Shields does it again! In fact, I think I enjoyed Sparrow’s story more than Tera’s. Yep, I said it. In the past two weeks, I’ve read two “second in a series” books that I think topped their kick off book. No second book slump here! Secrets of the Sky starts off strong and stays that way. We get Wiccans, warriors, immortals, dragons, demons, vampires and even were-panthers. We also get coffee shops, soothsayers, karaoke, sassy banter, mystical realms, unrequited love, and some pretty hot sexy times. It’s all good.
Sparrow makes for a pretty kickass heroine. She’s smart, sassy, and full of courage. Her unique gift is her ability to transform into any of the numerous birds she has tattooed on her back. As I read this I couldn’t help but think of some of the tattoos I’ve seen. Could you imagine if people could actually transform into some of the crazy stuff they get tattooed on their bodies. WOW! That would certainly make life interesting, no?!!? Anyway, Sparrow comes from a long line of powerful Wiccans but because her Mom has shied away from the practice, Sparrow hasn’t embraced it as much as she probably should’ve. Secrets of the Sky also explains how Sparrow gets these transformative traits she embraces so readily. Let’s just say, the woman has some pretty impressive DNA. Sparrow’s immortal warrior love, Rowan certainly has his hands full with her spitfire personality.
Shields does an excellent job building the extraordinary worlds…yes, worlds, the characters get to travel to. Her details make you feel like you can hear the waves crashing, smell the lavender fields and feel the fog all around you. Her characters are well planned, flawed yet perfectly matched. The action is intense, the suspense will leave you breathless, the pain feels real, both emotionally and physical and the romance, well, they don’t call this paranormal romance for nothing! Well done Ms. Shields. We’ve constructed quite a little family of characters with these books. You really care about them and long to hear what they have going on in their heads. From the silly, crazy exploits of Melissandra and Morgana, to the deep love of Tera and Sabin and Duncan and Michelle you get it all. You also get some other secondary characters, mainly other warriors and mystical realm kings that promise more books in this beautifully crafted series. I just want to throw it out there, I hope Duncan and Michelle get their own book, I love the heat coming off these two! There isn’t a cliffhanger but you will be left wanting more from this series.
If you are a paranormal fan, I strongly suggest you add this series to your TBR list. You’ll be transported to a world of wonder, sometimes a smelly and putrid world, other times sweet and beautiful. The action is expertly paced and the characters are the sorts that you’d want to have as friends in real life, well, except for the ones that smell like vomit and rotten eggs, let’s just keep those fellas in the book and away from our nasal passages! And to sweeten the pot, keep on scrolling for a chance to win your very own e-copy of Secrets of the Sky.

Wow. F*ckin wow. Thanks for such a great, thoughtful review. Makes waking up at 3am to work a trip to Canada a lot easier! I’m so glad you enjoyed Secrets of the Sky and don’t worry, Duncan and Michelle have their story, it was the first one I wrote. It ends where Fog begins.
I’m still beaming. I’ll probably reread this review a couple times while I’m boarding passengers

small miracles Hope!!
I loved Secrets of the Fog and can’t wait to add Secrets of the Sky to my reading list. I agree, Duncan and Michelle intrigued me. I want their story too.
Tara,
Apparently Duncan and Michelle’s story was written first! I’m so excited about that book!
Yep, his book, Secrets of the Jaguar is out in June. The next book (chronologically) is Pyrrhus’ book which I have written, but am holding on to for the moment.
It’s soooo action-packed. It begins where Sky left off with Pyrrhus in the fortress. Poor guy!
